Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children 2nd edition (MASC 2)

Thoroughly assesses youth anxiety disorders

The Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children 2nd Edition (MASC 2™) is a multi-rater, comprehensive assessment of anxiety dimensions in children and adolescents. The scale distinguishes between important anxiety symptoms and dimensions, indexing the range and severity of anxiety symptoms, that broadband measures do not capture. The MASC 2quantifies symptoms of anxiety using reports from children/adolescents, and parents (or alternative caregivers). It is comprised of a youth-friendly self-report format (MASC 2-SR) for the child and a parent response format (MASC 2-P), offering an overview of the child’s anxiety from multiple perspectives. When combinedwith other valid sources of information, the MASC 2 can aid in the early identification of anxiety-prone youth, as well as help monitor effects of treatment.

ASSESSMENT SCALES

The MASC 2 reports on an overall Anxiety Probability Score, as well as the following scales:

  • Separation Anxiety/Phobias

  • Social Anxiety (with subscales on humiliation/rejection and performance fears)

  • GAD Index

  • Obsessions and Compulsions

  • Physical Symptoms (further provides subscales on panic and tense/restless)

  • Harm Avoidance

  • and an Inconsistency Index

AREAS OF APPLICATION

The MASC 2 is useful in both educational and clinical contexts. When used within a battery of assessments, the MASC 2 can aid in:

  • Identification and diagnosis of anxiety disorders.

  • Providing a guide for treatment planning.

  • Monitoring the progress of intervention.

  • Screening large groups to identify which individuals may be at risk for heightened anxiety symptoms, potentially requiring further evaluation.

REPORT OPTIONS

  • ASSESSMENT REPORTS: provide information about a single MASC 2™ administration including the youth’s scores, how they compare to other children, and which scales and subscales are evaluated.

  • PROGRESS REPORTS: provide an overview of change over time by combining and comparing results of up to four administrations.

  • COMPARATIVE REPORTS: Compare the responses provided by the child with those provided by the child’s parent(s), thereby offering an overview of the child’s anxiety symptom status from multiple perspectives.
