Hogan Norm Update (2024)

Overview 

Given the official move to a four-point scale on both JVROnline and HALO, both the HPI and HDS required updated norms. The MVPI also has updated norms, despite still employing a three-point scoring scale. These updated norms are based on samples collected between September 2018 and April 2022. The South African, as well as the global, normative samples were stratified per inventory, and are summarised below. Further detail about the sample and their demographic can be reviewed in the Hogan International Manuals and South African Technical Supplements, available on request to all Hogan-certified practitioners.  

Practical Implications 

As with the previous norm, score ranges should be interpreted, rather than the precise score that the candidate obtained. The ranges for the HPI and MVPI are the quartiles: Low – 0 to 24, Below Average – 25 to 49, Above Average – 50 to 74, and High – 75 to 100.  Likewise, the risk ranges for the HDS are No Risk – 0 to 39, Low Risk – 40 to 69, Moderate Risk – 70 to 89, and High Risk – 90 to 100.  

In comparing the 2019 and 2023 norms, on average, interpretative levels for about 75% of people do not change on any given scale. This number is highest for the MVPI (88.7%) and lowest for the HPI (62.8%), with the HDS (69.4%) falling between the other two assessments. These results are not surprising as we are not updating the MVPI’s response options. Approximately 24% of people’s scores will shift one interpretative level. Almost no one will change two (1.2%) or three (0.0%) interpretative levels. 

Additionally, as with the previous norm, the scale scores are country-norm sensitive on all three assessments. However, as with the previous norm update, it was found that there were no significant cultural/language/country differences at bricks/subscales levels. As such, the bricks/subscales are reflective of the global norm only, and are not country-specific, like the overall scales.
