HR BASICS: Managing poor performance

The success of every organisation depends on the performance of employees

e-Learning

The success of every organisation depends on the performance of employees. Poor performance is one of the main causes why a firm goes down and seizes to exist. In running a venture, staff performance management is an indispensable skill for a company to thrive as well as to survive.

JVR Academy, in collaboration with Employ Consulting, is launching a brand-new online course, aimed at both experienced as well as relatively inexperienced managers and supervisors, as a practical hands-on method to deal effectively with poor performance and below expected standards of output.

The course consists of six modules and the content is organised into the following sections:

  • An explanation of the essential elements of the employment relationship, inclusive of a distinction between capacity and misconduct as well as important legal considerations.

  • Dealing effectively with poor work performance problems inclusive of a step-by-step method to manage the poor performance process.

  • A toolkit which consists of user-friendly forms, letters, checklists, and process documentation.

At the successful completion of the course, you will be able to:

  • Effectively manage poor performance, in all its facets through the practical application of knowledge gained.

  • Identify, assess and act on the most common performance related problems.

  • Distinguish between misconduct and capacity related matters in order to ensure that the appropriate and applicable remedial procedure will be followed.

  • Distinguish between ‘inefficiency’ and ‘incompetence’ in order to initiate the correct steps.

  • Conduct counselling interviews.

  • Draft and compile notices to attend poor work performance/capacity hearings as well as accompanying record keeping.

  • Complete (and correctly assess) performance checklists.

  • Correctly and effectively interpret the applicable provisions of Schedule 8: Code of Good Practice - Dismissal

  • Make informed decisions in respect of terminations of employment for reasons of work performance, incapacity as well as medical incapacity.
